Jim I. Mertz, MD, FACP, FASN
Dr. Jim Mertz is Board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology. He has been in practice for 40 years. Dr. Mertz is also a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as a fellow in the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Nephrology. Dr. Mertz earned his medical degree in 1973 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas, and completed his internal medicine internship and residency at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Mertz completed his clinical nephrology fellowship at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was later appointed as an instructor in medicine. Dr. Mertz also served as a Major in the United States Air Force Medical Corps Department of Internal Medicine at Sheppard Regional Hospital located at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. Dr. Mertz is currently with the Mayo Nephrology Collaborative Group for the study of glomerulonephritis. He is also a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Nephrology, and the National Kidney foundation. Awards and recognitions Dr. Mertz has received throughout his career include the United States Air Force Commendation Medal; appointment as Fellow at the American College of Physicians; appointment as Fellow at the American Society of Nephrology; appointment to St. Luke's Medical Endowment Society for Medical Education; the House Staff Teaching Award for St. Luke's Hospital; the Squire's "Doctor's Choice" Physician of 1997; recognition in America's Top Physicians in 2003, 2006, and 2013; and listing in "Best Doctors in America" from 2005 through 2013. He also received the Patient's Choice Award in 2011 and 2012 and was named America's Most Compassionate Doctor in 2012. In 2014, Dr. Mertz was selected as one of Kansas City's Best Doctors and a Super Doctor. Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Mertz enjoys traveling with his family which include; his wife Veronica and their three children Josh, Joey and Jessica. He is a member of St. Ann's church in Prairie Village, Kansas. He is also an active member and supporter of the KU endowment Society and the KU Chancellor's club.
