Karen Tamano, MD


Dr. Karen Tamano is a Board-certified nephrologist and internal medicine specialist who recently joined Kansas City Kidney Consultants.

Dr. Tamano graduated with honors in 2001 and did her residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) in Kansas City, Missouri. After completion of the internal medicine program at UMKC, she completed a Clinical and Research Nephrology fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She is a recipient of Dr. Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (National Institutes of Health T-32 Research Grant (2009-2011).

Dr. Tamano has also participated in and co-authored several research papers. In 2009, she participated in the clinical study of Primary Immune Response Among Chronic Dialysis Patients who Received H1 N1 vaccine. Other research involvement included several studies in the Department of Anatomy in Cell Biology the University of Kansas Medical Center. She is passionate about both basic and translational research. One of them primarily involves the cell cycle regulation and kidney development and Cux-1 receptor. At that same time, she had also participated in an investigation looking at Reduced Notch Signaling an Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease in 2010. Dr. Tamano also participated in a multicenter, open-label, extension study to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of oral Tolvaptan tablet regimen in subjects with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. Dr. Tamano worked closely with the late Dr. Jared Grantham in data collection and analysis of the Consortium of Radiologic Imaging Studies and Polycystic Kidney Disease (CRISP). Among others, she has also shown interest in translational research, where she participated and Inhibition of Notch Pathway Attenuation in the Progression of HIV-associated Nephropathy. She also has a published article with regards to the outcome of this research study in the American Journal of Renal Physiology.

Dr. Tamano is a member of the American Society of Nephrology and the American College of Physicians. In the changing landscape of the practice of Medicine, Dr. Tamano is passionate about communication and interpersonal skills, professionalism and humanism, diagnostic acumen, skillful negotiation of the healthcare system, knowledge and scholarly approach to clinical practice, and continuous interest for improvement in clinical medicine, and collaborating with investigators to advance science and discovery.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Tamano enjoys spending time with her husband and three young boys. On her free time, she plays the piano and has a high interest in classical music.
